Well Woody Austin, who finished second to Tiger in last year’s PGA, blew a gasket somewhere in the first and second rounds. I watched his candid interviews this week and saw the softer side of Woody. He seemed to be playing well leading up to the PGA. He had two top tens in his last four events and a decent showing at the British. With the Ryder Cup on the line, his past success at the PGA and the focus put on him from the nightly interviews on the Golf Channel; I thought he could do it. I was way wrong. Maybe the course was just too long for Woody. He wasn’t alone in missing the cut. How about these notables who missed it- Trevor Immelman, Lee Westwood, Fred Couples, Zach Johnson, KJ Choi, Adam Scott, Stewart Cink, Miguel Jimenez, Stephen Ames and Vijay Singh. Wow that’s some big names that caved at Oakland Hills.
Next was Kenny Perry with the scratched eyeball. How am I supposed to predict that one?
Then I went with Rocco, Stricker, Appleby, Ogilvy, and Goosen. Well Goosen and Appleby were the only two that threatened the leaderboard. I believe Appleby finished top 15 and Goosen top 20. I didn’t check for sure though. The others all made the cut, so I had lots of dogs in the race.
The slight oversight on my part was to eliminate the European players since they had not won since the second World War. If I would have ruled them out the last 78 years I’d have been spot on. Instead I look like a bonehead. The leaderboard, in case you missed it, was painted with Europeans- Stenson, Garcia, Harrington, Rose.
Maybe I’ll fair better picking the Ryder Cup. I’ve got a 50-50 shot.
